Catapult

The Macedonians developed the catapult as a siege engine for the armies of Philip II and Alexander the Great.

Soldiers besieging towns and castles in the Middle Ages catapulted decaying carcasses of animals over the defensive walls to spread disease.

The last large scale military use of catapults was during the trench warfare of World War I. During the early stages of the war, catapults were used to throw hand grenades across no man's land into enemy trenches. They were eventually replaced by small mortars.

In January 2011 it was reported that a group of smugglers used a homemade catapult to deliver marijuana into the United States from Mexico. The machine was found 20 feet from the border fence with 4.4 pounds  bales of marijuana ready to launch.
