Croquet

Pall Mall in London is named after an early form of the game – paille-maille – played there by Charles II.

Records show the similar game of "crookey" being played at Castlebellingham, Ireland in 1834.

The modern game of croquet arrived in Great Britain from Ireland during the 1850s.

The oldest document to bear the word croquet with a description of the modern game is the set of rules registered by Isaac Spratt in November 1856 with the Stationers' Company in London.

Lewis Carroll immortalized croquet in Alice in Wonderland when he depicted the Red Queen wacking rolled up hedgehogs using a flamingo for a mallet.

The world’s most famous tennis club, Wimbledon, began as the All England Croquet Club in 1868. In 1876, lawn tennis, a game devised by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier, was added to the activities of the All-England Croquet Club. In spring 1877, the club was renamed "The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club".

France won all the medals at the Olympic croquet in 1900. All the entrants were French.

Croquet has been played on ice in Antarctica by fans at a US observatory station.
