Lawn

Traditional grass lawns originated as a status symbol for the wealthy. Neatly cut lawns used solely for aesthetics became a status symbol as it demonstrated that the owner could afford to maintain grass that didn’t serve purposes of food production.

Before the invention of the lawn mower in 1830, lawns were maintained by the grazing of horses and sheep. Only the very wealthy could afford to pay teams of scythe-wielding laborers to keep their pristine lawns in check.


President Woodrow Wilson kept a flock of sheep on the White House lawn. He sold the wool and gave the money to the Red Cross.

It takes eight hours to mow the White House lawns . Gardeners mow them twice a week to the precise level of 2½ inches.
