Liechtenstein

The Principality of Liechtenstein was created on January 23, 1718. Liechtenstein was a part of the Holy Roman Empire until 1806 when it became an independent principality.

It was closely tied first to the Austrian Empire and later to Austria-Hungary until the end of World War I, after which Liechtenstein became linked with Switzerland in a customs union.

Liechtenstein had an army of 80 men, which fought during the 1866 Austro-Prussian war. They suffered no injuries or deaths and returned home with 81 people because they made a new Italian friend. The army was disbanded soon after and the country hasn't had an army since.

The last country in Europe to give votes to women was Liechtenstein in 1984.

Switzerland accidentally invaded Liechtenstein in 2007 when 170 Swiss soldiers got lost in the rain. The Lichtenstein government accepted a Swiss apology, saying that "it has happened before" and "nobody really realized it".

For a while in the 2010s, private clients could rent the principality of Liechtenstein  for $70,000 a night. This included hanging out with the head of state, temporary currency, the ability to rename streets and a symbolic key to the state.

Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world and the smallest bordering two countries.

Liechtenstein is between Austria and Switzerland. It is with Uzbekistan, one of only two doubly landlocked countries. This means that it is landlocked by a landlocked country.

The official language in Liechtenstein is German.

The capital of Liechtenstein is Vaduz, a very small town of 5,000 people.

The flags of Haiti and Liechtenstein were found to be identical at the 1936 Olympics. The following year Liechtenstein added a crown in the corner of its flag to make it different.


"God Save The King/Queen" was the first song to successfully be used as a national anthem. Its success prompted a number of imitations, and other countries continued to use the English National Anthem's tune for a long time. Liechtenstein still uses the tune.

At 13 letters, Liechtenstein is the country with the longest one-word common name in English.

Liechtenstein, the world's sixth smallest country, is the largest exporter of false teeth.  It produces 60 million sets a year, which is about 20 per cent of the world total.

Liechtenstein has an incarceration rate of 19 per 100,000—with its population of just 37,000, there are approximately 7 people in prison.

There are no airports in Liechtenstein. Zurich is the nearest international airport.

On August 15, Liechtenstein's National Day, the Prince of Liechtenstein invites the residents of his tiny country to have a beer in the garden of his castle.

Snoop Dogg once tried to rent the entire country of Liechtenstein for a video shoot for an unknown song. The rapper sought the tiny Alpine nation out because he needed tons of outdoor space to shoot the clip. The main reason they declined is because Snoop didn't give them enough notice.

Liechtenstein has won a total of nine medals at the Winter Olympics, all for alpine skiing. The country has never won a medal at the Summer Olympics and is the only country to have won Winter Olympic medals but not Summer Olympics.
