Casserole

The word “casserole”, originally French,was first used in the early eighteenth century to describe a dish or pot made from a material such as aluminium, cast iron, earthenware or glass in which food is both served and cooked.

The idea of casserole cooking as a one-dish meal became increasingly popular in America in the 1950s  as housewives learnt to create dishes by mixing together the readily available canned meats and fish, vegetables and soups. Tuna-noodle casserole was a particular favorite.

40% of the cream of mushroom soup sold in the U.S. goes to make green bean casserole.
