Caterpillar

Caterpillar means "hairy cat" in Old French.

The average caterpillar has sixteen legs.

Caterpillars have as many as 4,000 muscles — humans only have 629.

Caterpillars literally melt down into a sac of fluid cells which are used to create the entire body of a butterfly from scratch.

The silkworm is not a worm – it is a caterpillar.

A silkworm caterpillar can eat up to 86,000 times its own body weight, around three grams, in less than two months.

The caterpillar almost continually defecates. When there are enough caterpillars in the same place, their defecation is audible. Butterflies, however do not urinate or defecate.
