Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise was born in Syracuse, New York on July 3, 1962.

His full name is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, of which he was named after his great-grandfather Thomas Cruise O'Mara.

Tom Cruise was born into poverty to parents Mary Lee, a special education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer. He has often referred to his father as an abusive coward who couldn't be trusted.

He lived in Canada for three years beginning in 1971. Cruise's family moved to the Ottawa suburb of Beacon Hill so that his father could take a position as a defense consultant with the Canadian Armed Forces. He attended Grades 4 and 5 at Robert Hopkins Elementary School and Grade 6 at Henry Munro Middle School.

Tom Cruise was diagnosed with dyslexia at 6 yrs old and graduated high school as a functional illiterate, relying on his sister for help with schoolwork. He didn't learn to read until 1986, the year Top Gun was released.

Cruise used to be a part of a wrestling team in high school until he suffered from an injury. This was thought of to be the reason behind why he went for acting instead.

Before becoming famous, Cruise worked as a bus boy, porter, table cleaner and a newspaper boy.

Cruise was raised as Catholic and actually wanted to be a priest in his earlier days.  He left seminary school a year after enrolling.

Cruise loves flying planes, having earned his pilot license way back in 1994.

Tom Cruise is a keen fencer which might just be a left over from his role in the 2003 film The Last Samurai, in which he spent a great deal of time learning to use a sword.

Cruise began acting in the early 1980s and first appeared in a bit part in the 1981 film Endless Love, followed by a major supporting role as a crazed military academy student in Taps later that year. He made his breakthrough with leading roles in the comedy film Risky Business (1983) and action drama film Top Gun (1986).

He has won three Golden Globe Awards and has been nominated for three Academy Awards. Despite his Oscar nods, he has yet to take home his own golden statuette.

Tom Cruise loves to do his own stunts. One of his craziest stunts involved him holding on to a moving plane in Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.

In preparation for Collateral, Tom Cruise dressed up as a UPS man and delivered packages in character without being recognized.

A devout follower of Scientology, he admitted that his ex-wife Katie Holmes left him in order to protect their daughter from the religion. He also noted that Suri is no longer a practicing member of the church.

During his marriage to Nicole Kidman, it was rumored that their marriage was just a cover for him being a homosexual. A porn star named Chad Slater kickstarted the rumors, but was later sued by the actor and was ordered to pay $10 million.

Tom Cruise has been married three times, but has also been linked to several other actresses rumored to have auditioned in his church to become his fourth wife.

Tom Cruise's marriages to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes each ended when his respective wife was 33. Moreover, each ex-partner was 11 years younger than the one before.

Cruise suffered from Dyslexia, but caused a stir in the medical community by claiming that his controversial Scientology religion helped cure him of it.

Tom Cruise wore braces as late as 2002 to straighten his teeth which he would remove during movie shoots.

He has a cousin named William Mapother, who has co-starred in several of his movies.

The Disney character Aladdin was modeled after Tom Cruise.

He sued a cybersquatter by the name of Jeff Burgar in 2006 over the rights to TomCruise.com and won.

Tom Cruise helped NASA redesign its website to make it easier to use.

After meeting Princess Diana on several occasions, Tom Cruise and his ex-wife Nicole Kidman were at her funeral on September 6, 1997.

He can hold his breath for six minutes.

October 10th is Tom Cruise Day in Japan. It was established in 2006 by the Japan Memorial Day Association to honor Cruise's frequent visits to the country and his popularity with Japanese fans. Cruise has visited the Japan over 20 times, more than any other Western actor.
