Drag Racing

In 1937 Wally Parks founded the Road Runners Club, considered to be the start of organized drag racing.

The first commercial drag strip, the Santa Ana Drags, begun at Orange County Airport (now John Wayne Airport) in Santa Ana, in Southern California in 1950. Admission was 50 cents -- or 75 cents if the ticket holder wanted to watch the mechanics work.

The NHRA held its first official drag race in April on a section of the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds parking lot in Pomona, California in 1953.

A Top Fuel dragster accelerates so quickly that its already passed 60 mph by the time the rear tires have crossed the start line (25 feet).
