Dynamite

Explosives were first used in China at the Battle of Ts'ai-shih in 1161

The chemist Alfred Nobel of Stockholm, Sweden demonstrated dynamite for the first time, at a quarry in Redhill, Surrey, England on July 14, 1867.

Dynamite's main explosive component is nitroglycerin and Alfred Nobel's youngest brother perished when an early experiment to stabilise nitroglycerine by adding a chalky material called kieselguhr, went horribly wrong.

The British Dynamite Co Ltd was formed in 1870 by Alfred Nobel to produce and market his new explosive 'dynamite'. The factory was set up at a desolate site far from houses in Ardeer, Ayrshire, because public opinion was suspicious of a product whose qualities were not completely understood. The first batch of dynamite was made in the Ardeer factory on January 13, 1873.

Alfred Nobel

In 1896, Nobel used his dynamite fortune to endow the Nobel Prizes.

Over 90% of Mount Rushmore was carved using dynamite. The blasts removed approximately 450,000 tonnes of rock.

By weight, chocolate chip cookies contain more energy than TNT.

Peanuts are one of the ingredients of dynamite. They are ground down to make an oil called glycerol, which is one of the main ingredients in nitroglycerin and nitroglycerin is the main part of dynamite.
