Earthworms force air through the underground tunnels they create, thereby aerating the soil as they work.

The reason why earthworms emerge after rain remains a bit of a mystery While early explanations suggested earthworms drown in flooded soil, this has been disproven. They can survive submerged for extended periods, so escaping rising water isn't their primary motivation. The leading theory is that heavy rain softens the soil and makes it easier for worms to move around, potentially increasing their chances of encountering mates and food sources.

Earthworms are unable to drown like a human would, and they can even survive several days fully submerged in water. They breathe through their skin and can handle water as easily as air.

The average length of a South African earthworm is about 6 feet long. The largest one ever found so far was found on a road side in 1967 and was 22 feet long,

Australia is home to the giant Gippsland earthworm, which can grow to some six feet long and can be heard underfoot when it burrows.

Most of North America's earthworms are not native, the native earthworms were killed of by an ice sheet around 10000 years ago. Most earthworms in North America today were descended from those introduced by settlers in the 18th century.

It was Charles Darwin who told the world about he important function of the earthworm in breaking down leaves and turning earth into fertile soil.

As a child, Charles Dodgson (Lewis Carroll) tried to encourage modern warfare among earthworms by giving them small pieces of clay pipe for weapons.
