In 1859 a Swiss businessman Henri Dunant, travelling through Italy during the Italian War for Independence, saw the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino. Nearly 30,000 were killed or wounded and he organised a group of volunteers to help them. Dunant recorded his memories and experiences in the book A Memory of Solferino, in which he suggested an international association of volunteers be raised to help care for the wounded and imprisoned in wartime. The tomee inspired the creation of the formation of the Red Cross, with a key stated aim of "aid to sick and wounded soldiers in the field". The Red Cross and Red Crescent are still the largest provider of first aid worldwide.
