Golf Majors

The Open Golf Championship, the annual British golfing championship, was first contested at Prestwick, South Ayrshire, Scotland on October 17, 1860. The competition was opened to both professionals and amateurs the following year.

The first US Open Men's Golf Championship, administered by the United States Golf Association, was played at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island on October 4, 1895. It was a one-day event played immediately after the three-day U.S. Amateur, which received much more attention at the time.

The first US Open Men's Golf Championship was won by English professional golfer Horace Thomas Rawlins  by two strokes over 36 holes. He won $150 plus a $50 gold medal and the Open Championship Cup, which went to his club.

The first PGA Championship was held in 1916.

The first year tickets were sold for the US Open Men's Golf Championship was 1922. The price of a single day ticket was $1.

The Masters Golf Tournament was the idea of the former leading US amateur golfer Robert Tyre ('Bobby') Jones (1902-71), who lived in Georgia. American Horton Smith won the first Masters Golf Tournament under the magnolia trees of Augusta National in 1934.

The British Open is now played over 72 holes at a different venue each year. All courses are seaside links.

The winner of the British Open receives a silver claret jug, as well as a sizeable cheque.

The winner of the Masters receives (for a year) a coveted green jacket as part of the prize.

The winner of the US Open receives a gold champion's medal, and the US Open Championship Cup, which the winner is allowed to keep for a year.

Rory McIlroy holds the US Open record for both the lowest aggregate score and score under par in 2011 at 268 and 16-.

Australian Jason Day won the 2015 US PGA Championship with a score of 20 under par. The lowest ever total at one of golf's four majors, it broke Tiger Woods's record of 19 under at the 2000 Open Championship. Henrik Stenson at the 2016 UK Open, Dustin Johnson at the 2020 Masters, and Cam Smith at the 2022 UK Open, all equaled his 20 under par record

When Phil Mickelson won the 2021 PGA Championship, he became the oldest major championship winner in history at the age of 50 years, 11 months, and 7 days.
