Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex

EARLY LIFE

Prince Harry was born in the lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London, on September 15, 1984 at 4.20 pm. He weighed 6 pounds 14 ounces. His proud father told crowds outside his son had hair of "a sort of indeterminate color."

Harry is the younger son of Charles III and the late Diana, Princess of Wales. He is the younger brother of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge.

Harry was baptized on December 21, 1984 at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie. His godparents were the Duke of York (his paternal uncle), Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones (his paternal cousin once removed), Lady Celia Vestey (née Knight), Carolyn Bartholomew (née Pride), Bryan Organ and Gerald Ward (former officer in the Household Cavalry).

His full name is Henry Charles Albert David Mountbatten-Windsor — Harry is just a nickname.

His mother called Harry "My little Spencer" because his red hair comes from her family.

Prince Harry had a pony named Smokey when he was a kid.

Harry's parents divorced in 1996, and his mother died following a car accident in Paris the following year. Harry and William were staying with their father at Balmoral at the time, and the Prince of Wales told his sons about their mother's death.

Harry's education started at Jane Mynors' nursery school and the pre-preparatory Wetherby School, both in London. Following this, he attended Ludgrove School.

After passing the entrance exams, Harry was admitted to Eton College, following in the Spencer family footsteps, as both Diana's father and brother had attended Eton.

In June 2003, Harry completed his education at Eton with two A-Levels, achieving a grade B in art and D in geography.

After leaving school, Harry took a gap year, during which he spent time in Australia, working on a cattle station and participating in the Young England vs Young Australia Polo Test Match.

Harry also traveled to the south African nation of Lesotho, where he co-founded a charity to help children who lost their parents to AIDS along with Prince Seeiso.

MILITARY CAREER

Harry entered the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst on May 8, 2005, where he was known as Officer Cadet Wales, and joined the Alamein Company.

Harry completed his officer training eleven months later and was commissioned as a Cornet (second lieutenant) in the Blues and Royals, a regiment of the Household Cavalry in the British Army. He was given the service number 564673. On April 13, 2008, when he reached two years' seniority, Harry was promoted to lieutenant.

An announcement was made in February 2007 that Harry would be deployed with his regiment to Iraq, as part of the 1st Mechanised Brigade of the 3rd Mechanised Division. Three months later it was announced Harry wouldn't be sent to Iraq due to concerns of the prince being a high-value target and the dangers the soldiers around him would face should any attempt be made on Harry's life or capture.

Harry was secretly deployed several months later as a Forward Air Controller to Helmand Province in Afghanistan. His tour made the prince the first member of the Royal Family to serve in a war zone since his uncle, Prince Andrew, flew helicopters during the Falklands War. He completed a second secret tour of Afghanistan in 2013.

Harry attended the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury, where he joined brother William. He was presented with his flying brevet (wings) by his father on May 7, 2010 at a ceremony at the Army Air Corps Base (AAC), Middle Wallop.

PERSONAL LIFE

Harry's full title is His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales.

Harry’s nickname, used by friends and even bodyguards, is Spike.

Prince Harry has his own personal coat of arms, which includes seashells for Princess Diana's house of Spencer.

On 4 June 2015, as part of the 2015 Special Honours, Prince Harry was knighted by his grandmother, the Queen, for "services to the sovereign", being appointed a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO).

The press began to report his relationship with American actress Meghan Markle in October 2016 and their engagement was announced on November 27, 2017.

Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex's marriage ceremony took place on May 19, 2018, at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and his wife announced in January 2020 their intention to step back from senior roles in the royal family and become financially independent. The severance deal that Buckingham Palace announced for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a week later made a more thorough break with the royal family than the couple apparently expected.
