The Late, Great Planet Earth

In 1970 the American evangelist and writer Hal Lindsay published his book of end-times speculation, The Late Great Planet Earth. In it he used John Darby's Pre-millennium interpretation of the End Times (Christians caught in a rapture before a seven year tribulation), which was popularized in the 1909 Schofield Bible.

Lindsay's book was a huge commercial success. It went on to be published in over 50 languages and to sell over 35 million copies.

The Late Great Planet Earth was adapted by Rolf Forsberg and Robert Amraminto into a movie narrated by Orson Welles, which was released in theaters in 1979.

Today in America the pre-millennium theology Lindsay espoused is now a mainstream interpretation of Jesus' Second Coming.

Thee book's championing of the dispensationalist teaching of Jews as God's chosen people has influenced the stance of several American presidents when determining their stance on Israel.
