Parade

The 4th of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island, is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the U.S. The town has thrown the celebration every year since 1785.

Poet/writer Edgar Allan Poe was expelled from West Point, the United States Military Academy, for showing up for a public parade wearing only a white belt and gloves.

The first ticker-tape parade took place in New York City in 1886 when office workers spontaneously throw ticker tape into the streets as the Statue of Liberty was dedicated.

It has continued to be a symbol of unity, cultural pride, and celebration within the African American community in Chicago and beyond. The event typically takes place on the second Saturday in August. 

The Macy's Parade was halted during World War II. There were rubber and helium shortages, so Macy’s canceled the parade from 1942 to 1944. The company deflated its rubber balloons—which weighed 650 pounds total—and donated them to the government.

NBC made the first coast-to-coast NTSC color broadcast on January 1, 1954 when it telecast the Tournament of Roses Parade, with public demonstrations given across the United States on prototype color receivers.


The largest inaugural parade was for Dwight Eisenhower in 1953. It lasted more than four hours.
